What does it mean to learn? learning has long been considered a one-way movement of information from the one teaching the learning and one receiving the learning, as if the former possess the knowledge only in order to pass it to the latter. however, upon listening to the knowledge traditions from across the world, we are reminded that knowledge is neither possessed nor passed; instead, it is held in relation by both (or more) of the participants engaged in the process-the doing-of learning. and where does this knowledge reside? in landscapes, memories, practices, songs, arts, crafts, seasonal rhythms, and especially in the interdependent relationship between human and more-than-human worlds.
About
LAND (Learning through Arts, Narrative and Discourse), founded by Kriti Sood in 2021, is a pedagogical research lab dedicated to formulating art(s) as the reimagined language(s) of learning. We begin with the foundational belief that learning is an act of relating to one another and the wider world. Learning starts only when looking deepens into seeing and hearing amplifies into listening. Looking and hearing, both acts of unconscious sensory reception, are replaced by seeing and listening, both conscious ethics of attention. To see and to listen is to acknowledge the relationality of our living and learning practices: that knowledge exists beyond the self in communities, ecologies, and (hi)stories.
In the spirit of learning as relating, we ask: how might-and in what forms-learning emerge when artists create with ecologists, when researchers train through craftspeople, when children narrativise notes from elders, and when landscapes themselves offer lessons? We draw from multiple modalities, multimedia sources, and plural knowledge systems, understanding learning as trans-contextual, situated, and embodied. In the process, the linearity of movement of knowledge is organically discarded, as its circulation across generations and geographies is revealed.
Our interventions in education and curation are led by learning as a process of inquiry and, through participation, becoming. Across our engagements with individuals, institutions, and communities, we bring creative arts and critical thinking together, integrating a range of forms and methodologies into curricula through collaborative practices.
